Animals and Insects That Use Their Dung In Fascinating Ways

Visual Arts students work with famed performance artist

Clay is a very sensual, earthy material. Many myths say we (humans) are molded from clay; created from the earth to one day return to the earth. After the performance I went to touch the monument. I was expecting it to feel warm – but it was very cool. I liked the feeling of put my hands where Cassil’s were – especially the hard to reach spots – trying to get a sense of the gestures involved. That was my favorite aspect of the performance piece. You can never truly know someone until you’ve “walked a mile in their shoes” the saying goes.

 

TOUCH

My touch project musings became a springboard for the collaborative Entanglement project.

Everyone in the class would be given a 6 inch strand of material/yarn/string, each one different. The students would spend time “getting to know” this piece of material during the course of the term. They would take it home, keep it in their pocket, under their pillow etc.

Meanwhile, an installation would be created that would fill a darken room with long strands of these same materials – each material being used only once.

The premise is that viewers would enter the darkened room and feel their way through the tangles. Because of the bonding time the students had with their individual strands, they would eventually be able to locate the matching fabric through only the sense of touch.

 

SIGHT

The inspiration for this project came from one of our early classes when we walked through UVic campus taking photos of places that were dangerous to birds.

The silhouette of a bird of prey is often placed on windows as a warning to other birds to keep clear and therefore stay safe from crashes. I’ve extended this visual device to include iconic logos that are uniquely civil/urban. Here the warning that keeps birds from crashing into windows is that this is a human dominated/declared space.
